#87 Starling

Hey folks,

Another common garden bird today, this time the Starling.

I love these birds – they have a lot of character and are very cheeky. I quite often just sit and watch them squabbling and playing in the garden. They are also very good mimics – the ones which frequent my back garden and the local trees are very, very good at mimicking other birds (ours especially like to mimic Buzzards, which must be terrifying for other birds and small rodents!) as well as making alarm noises and even copying the noise the railway crossing makes. Some starlings have been shown to be able to mimic human speech.

Apart from their amazing mimicry they are also beautiful birds. Another one that I think is very underrated. They are often perceived as being plain black or brown but upon closer inspection they are a beautiful range of deep and vibrant colours, with stunning variations in the patterns of their different feathers as well.

Have a closer look next time you hear them squabbling in your garden!

Thanks for visiting,
