#94 Song Thrush

Hey folks,

Today’s photo (or should I say, today’s bird, given it’s been almost exclusively birds I’ve been posting lately?!) is of this inquisitive looking song thrush peeking out from behind a patch of grass.

Song thrush are a relative of the blackbird (which are also a type of thrush) and although the female blackbirds and song thrush have a similar brown colour, blackbirds don’t have the same striking pattern on their underparts – or the same unique song.

Song thrush start singing around late winter here, and I love hearing their song when I’m out a walk or among all the other early morning bird song out my bedroom window. Sometimes I’ll just stop to listen when I hear one out walking. They can be quite shy birds so I can’t always see them, but I definitely hear them!

Sadly, like a lot of birds in the U.K., song thrush numbers have been in decline in both urban and rural areas, though they were recently moved from the U.K. bird conservation ‘Red List’ (the most threatened) to the Amber List due to an increase in breeding numbers, which is hopeful.

Thanks for visiting,

Kaylin
