#103 Tree Creeper

Hey folks,

Today’s photo is is of long-toed tree creeper – quite a horrible sounding name, but they are lovely little birds.

I had never even heard of these birds before until recently, and now can’t help but notice them (or at least hear them) wherever I go.

In their hunt for tasty bugs they have this really interesting habit of starting at the bottom of a tree and (very quickly) crawling their way up the trunk until they reach the top, then flying to the bottom of the next tree and repeating.

They can be quite difficult to get a picture of because they do move so fast. This is probably the best I’ve managed yet – and not coincidentally because this was probably the longest I’d seen one sit still! I think it was having a little rest from hunting and I just happened upon it at the right time.

Thanks for visiting,

Kaylin

  1. Much more prettier than the Tree Creepers I have here at my place in Australia.
Distinguishing Tree Creepers by long toes is a bit of a waste as all Tree Creepers have long toe

    1. Apparently ours are just called common tree creepers, and the ones in Southern Europe are called short toed, so I think I might have made the long toe name up 😂 At any rate you’re right, both the European ones are identical and have long toes… I don’t know what happened when they were naming all the birds honestly!

    1. They’re really lovely aren’t they! They tend to stick to woodland, and often hang about with flocks of blue tits, great tits and long tailed tits so if you see groups of those there are probably tree creepers around too 🙂

Your art is amazing by the way, I love the world turtles!

      1. Ooooh I didn’t know that, there are loads of Blue and Great tits about here so I’ll have to keep an eye out!

Thank you so much I often wonder if my World Turtles are a bit too weird!
