#106 Nuthatch

Hey folks.

Today’s shot is of one of our local nuthatch – a very striking little bird that is one of my favourites.

Nuthatch are almost like little woodpeckers in terms of their behaviour, as they tend to peck away at tree trunks to get bugs out, and crack nuts with their beaks (hence the name!).

I’ve been trying to get a good shot of these little guys for a while. I was lucky enough to happen across a nest – which is usually an abandoned woodpecker hole (another reason they are like little woodpeckers). I’ve been back a few times and have watched (from a distance) as the nuthatch goes back and forth with bits of moss and leaves to make its little home cosy.

We didn’t used to get nuthatch in Scotland – they were mainly a bird found in England. However, climate change has meant slightly warmer temperatures up here, and so the nuthatch have moved north. We now have lots round here. Climate change is definitely bad, but this is one silver lining at least.

Thanks for visiting,

Kaylin
