#120 Yellowhammer

Hey folks, hope you’re well πŸ™‚

Today’s photo is of a little yellowhammer – a beautiful little bird with a very distinct call. They are a gorgeous bright yellow with black/brown streaks, and have a beautiful crimson/brown colour on their back feathers, which is more apparent on the males.

This is a female I think, and about the best picture I’ve managed to get of one. There is only really one place around here that I know I can see them. They stick to particular types of agricultural land, mainly stubble fields where the ‘stubs’ of harvested crops are left after harvesting. Like many birds in the UK, yellowhammers are in decline and are on the conservation red list for that reason.

This little lady actually found me, so I was very lucky. She hopped out from beneath a hedge – yellowhammers nest on or near the ground under hedges at the edge of fields – and went back and forth between two hedges while trying to get a look at me, at one point coming right out in front of me to have a good stare!

Very cute πŸ™‚

Thanks for visiting,

Kaylin
