This spring we had the pleasure of a family of hares – mum and her three babies, or leverets as they’re known – hanging out in front of our house. I think they must have decided that hanging out in our bushes and planters (I nearly watered one by accident!) was safer than the adjacent fields. Other than occasionally nibbling some of our flowers they were pretty good neighbours, and we got to see the leverets grow up – and they grow quickly! We named the mother Primrose, and her babies Rosemary, Rock Rose, and Rose Hip. I’m not sure which baby this is, they grow so quickly that it was hard to keep track even though they were all born at different sizes and times; hares can gestate several different foetuses at once, called ‘superfetation’. Isn’t that amazing?
